When sending in a product to Amazon, whether it’s a new listing or a product that’s never been sold FBA before, it’s important to get an accurate weight to prevent paying higher fees. Amazon FBA fees are determined by size and weight of the item. If you provide a weight that’s too high you will pay higher fees. If you provide a weight that’s too low, well, Amazon will change it anyway so it’s best to be accurate form the start.

I have been using the same scale forever. A scale I got for free when I signed up for Stamps.com nearly 20 years ago. I wouldn’t recommend this particular scale to anyone as it’s hard to find and isn’t anything particularly special. Any digital scale will work the main thing to look for is that grams as a unit and a tare button.

Amazon accepts weight in grams and since there can be variations in fees from ounce to ounce I like to use grams to be as accurate as possible. Tare weight comes in handy if you are trying to weigh an item that either won’t stay on the scale or is too large and covers the screen. If the item wants to roll away you can place a bowl or small container on the scale and press the tare button. It will zero the scale so you can weigh your item without counting the container. If an item is too large, say a text book, I like to place a small box or even a soda can on the scale, hit tare and then place the item on top. Now it will be high enough to easily read the display and use the buttons.

Best Digital Scale

The good news is Amazon makes a great digital scale with a super low price. The AmazonBasics Stainless Steel Topped Digital Scale supports grams and tare weight. Now, obviously if you already have a digital scale lying around there’s no need to upgrade to a new scale. However, if you are looking for a good scale that will last the test of time at a great price this one fits the bill.

Pros:

  • BPA Free
  • Batteries are included!
  • Prime shipping
  • Easy to read screen
  • Supports grams, ounces and pounds
  • BPA free
  • Supports up to 11 pounds

Cons:

  • Auto shutoff turns off after 3 minutes even if weight changes
  • Has trouble registering weight if less than 4 grams

I recommend this scale because it’s compact, easy to use and has an overwhelming amount of positive reviews. Again, if you have a scale lying around there’s no need to buy a new one. Any digital scale will work. Happy selling!
